Graduate Begins Women’s Mentoring Group
On November 12, DeLaSalle graduate Candy Wedlow spoke at the 19th Annual Movie Benefit. She was deeply moved by her experience. “I had no idea there were so many people in the community who support DeLaSalle.” This year Candy is doing her part to change the lives of the current students at DeLaSalle. When she learned that DeLaSalle had successfully launched a Men’s Mentoring Group last spring she decided to head up the creation of a Women’s Mentoring Group. DeLaSalle’s Vice Principal of Discipline and Attendance, Phyllis Bowie will be supporting her efforts. They plan to meet twice a month and work with the women on critical areas of self-esteem and character development. If you would like to find our more about how you can become involved, please contact guinnp@delasallecenter.org.

#HelpforHaiti@Lawrence Jan. 31st, 2010
Our very own Nini Negash and Joshua Seraphim Anderson from St. Sophia’s (http://saintsophia.blogspot.com/) in Lawrence Kansas, organized a fundraiser for those suffering in Haiti. It took place at Liberty Hall and it was a huge success, especially considering it was advertised mostly on websites, facebook, twitter and other social sites. As word spread, many businesses stepped up to donate goods for an auction, food, music etc…. All of the proceeds will go to Partners in Health, an organization that has been in Haiti for more than 20 years. They chose the organization because 95 percent of donations go directly to the aid of victims. Josh has set up a blog at http://helphaitishow.wordpress.com where you can find information if you are interested in donating or finding out about other efforts to help those in Haiti. We would like to say Thank You and may God bless you for just acting from your hearts and doing something for those in need. FROM THE PITCH Jan 12, 2010
(This article is in regards to violence in certain parts of Kansas City for the entire article go to:http://www.pitch.com/2010-01-14/news/hyde-park-neighborhood-association-vs-section-8-in-midtown-kansas-city
Rodney Knott came back to his hometown in 2002, after years of doing computer work in major cities around the country. He first settled on the corner of Armour and Holmes; he now lives a couple of blocks outside of Hyde Park but maintains close ties with the neighborhood association. He also is the executive director of an organization called ReEngage, which is focused on reuniting families in the urban core.
Knott: “If the complexion of the neighborhood hadn’t changed, would there be an outcry now? I don’t know. There were those who saw an opportunity to build a neighborhood, but I don’t think they were aware of what an urban neighborhood entails, the challenges that need to be addressed. And one of those challenges is an apathy toward crime. Some things are allowed to happen because folks turn their back on it. There’s been an influx of people not accustomed to turning their back.”
The search for KC’s best breakfast joints

To Michael Kizzee, this was the most important thing about enjoying the most important meal of the day: Breakfast is a cool way to have a date with your wife.
Actually, the Kizzees often go out for breakfast.
“It’s cheery and I am more awake,” said Kizzee, sitting with his wife, Alicia, at Browne’s Irish Market. Their two small children were with the grandparents.
