This Week at DeLaSalle February 18, 2010

Graduate Begins Women’s Mentoring Group
On November 12, DeLaSalle graduate Candy Wedlow spoke at the 19th Annual Movie Benefit. She was deeply moved by her experience. “I had no idea there were so many people in the community who support DeLaSalle.” This year Candy is doing her part to change the lives of the current students at DeLaSalle. When she learned that DeLaSalle had successfully launched a Men’s Mentoring Group last spring she decided to head up the creation of a Women’s Mentoring Group. DeLaSalle’s Vice Principal of Discipline and Attendance, Phyllis Bowie will be supporting her efforts. They plan to meet twice a month and work with the women on critical areas of self-esteem and character development. If you would like to find our more about how you can become involved, please contact guinnp@delasallecenter.org.

#HelpforHaiti@Lawrence      Jan. 31st, 2010

Our very own Nini Negash and Joshua Seraphim  Anderson from St. Sophia’s (http://saintsophia.blogspot.com/) in Lawrence Kansas, organized a fundraiser for those suffering in Haiti. It took place at Liberty Hall and it was a huge success, especially considering it was advertised mostly on websites, facebook, twitter and other social sites. As word spread, many businesses stepped up to donate goods for an auction, food, music etc….  All of the proceeds will go  to Partners in Health, an organization that has been in Haiti for more than 20 years. They chose the organization because 95 percent of donations go directly to the aid of victims.  Josh has set up a blog at http://helphaitishow.wordpress.com where you can find information if you are interested in donating or finding out about other efforts to help those in Haiti. We would like to say Thank You and may God bless you for just acting from your hearts and doing something for those in need. FROM THE PITCH Jan 12, 2010

(This article is in regards to violence in certain parts of Kansas City for the entire article go to:http://www.pitch.com/2010-01-14/news/hyde-park-neighborhood-association-vs-section-8-in-midtown-kansas-city

Rodney Knott came back to his hometown in 2002, after years of doing computer work in major cities around the country. He first settled on the corner of Armour and Holmes; he now lives a couple of blocks outside of Hyde Park but maintains close ties with the neighborhood association. He also is the executive director of an organization called ReEngage, which is focused on reuniting families in the urban core.

Knott: “If the complexion of the neighborhood hadn’t changed, would there be an outcry now? I don’t know. There were those who saw an opportunity to build a neighborhood, but I don’t think they were aware of what an urban neighborhood entails, the challenges that need to be addressed. And one of those challenges is an apathy toward crime. Some things are allowed to happen because folks turn their back on it. There’s been an influx of people not accustomed to turning their back.”

The search for KC’s best breakfast joints

By DEBRA SKODACK   The Kansas City Star

To Michael Kizzee, this was the most important thing about enjoying the most important meal of the day: Breakfast is a cool way to have a date with your wife.

Actually, the Kizzees often go out for breakfast.

“It’s cheery and I am more awake,” said Kizzee, sitting with his wife, Alicia, at Browne’s Irish Market. Their two small children were with the grandparents.

Biography of newly elected Patriarch Irinej of Serbia

February 01, 2010

22. January 2010 – 16:57

His Holiness Patriarch Irinej (Gavrilovic) of Serbia was born in the village of Vidova, near Cacak in 1930 by his father Zdravko and mother Milijana. When he was baptized he was named Miroslav. He finished the elementary school in his village, and then in Cacak he completed the high school. After the end of the high school he enrolled and completed a seminary in Prizren, and then he finished the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Belgrade. Upon graduation, he went into the army. Following his return from the army he was soon appointed a professor of the Prizren seminary. Before taking the office of the professor in October  1959, at the Rakovica monastery he was tonsured by His Holiness Patriarch German, gaining the monastic name of Irinej.

That same month, on St. Petka’s day, October 27, 1959 at the Ruzica church on the Kalemegdan, he was ordained to the rank of hieromonk. While he worked as the professor at the Prizren seminary he was sent to the postgraduate studies in Athens. In 1969 he was appointed as the head of the monastic school at the monastery of Ostrog, from where he returned back to Prizren and there he became a rector of the Prizren Seminary. From that duty, in 1974 he was elected for a vicar bishop of His Holiness Patriarch of Serbia with the title of Bishop of Moravica. A year later, in 1975 he was elected for Bishop of Nis, where he has been until now.

Bishop’s Visit

January 11, 2010

This past weekend, the city of Kansas City received a Christmas present in the form of His Grace our Bishop Longin, of  the Serbian Orthodox Metropolitanate of New Gracanica and the Mid-West.

Arriving in the arctic temperatures, he served the Divine Liturgy at St. Mary of Egypt Orthodox Church on Saturday Jan.9th. He was accompanied by local priests, Fr. Paisius Altschul and Fr. Justin Mathews of St. Mary’s, Fr. Mihailo Mikic of St. Michael’s and Fr. Elias Issa of St. Basil’s both in Kansas City, Kansas. Also serving were Fr. Deacons Theodore Nickelsson of Ava, Missouri and Nikolaj Kostur accompanying His Grace.

At the beginning of  the service, he ordained Tikhon Flores and Michael/Mihailo Wilson first as Readers, and then as Subdeacons.  Towards the end of the service, he ordained Subdeacon Theophan Frazier to the Deaconate.

Friends, family and church members braved the cold and snow, to witness this graced filled occasion of the ordination of our brothers in Christ.

Saturday night His Grace attended Vespers at St. George.

Sunday morning at St. Archangel Michael’s, to a congregation full of eager faces, His Grace again served the Divine Liturgy, and ordained to the Deaconate Mihailo Wilson. Fr. Deacon Mihailo and Josephina’s addition to the family at St. Archangel Michael’s, has and will be a blessing to all, as it was at St. Mary’s.

It was  a wonderful weekend to experience the grace and humility which our Bishop holds and disperses. He is  truly a monk, a priest  and a Hierarch. We are very grateful for his prayers and care for us in the Orthodox Church.
